A Colorful Adirondack Porch Makeover

When we were approached by a couple interested in decorating their newly built home with POLYWOOD furniture, we immediately jumped at this unique opportunity. The homeowners, Blake and Amanda, wanted to transform their front porch into a bright and welcoming setting using a particular chair in a specific lumber color: our South Beach Adirondack in Tangerine. Knowing exactly what they wanted gave our team a headstart on brainstorming, which left us extra time to do a bit of experimenting.

Our South Beach Collection looks particularly great styled at tropical or coastal homes due to the furniture’s breezy, laid-back vibe. But these aren’t the only places where it thrives, and this makeover was our chance to showcase the collection’s versatility—to think outside the beach, if you will.

The South Beach Adirondack

In comparison to our other Adirondack styles, this is a mid-size chair. The seat height is mid-range, about 16 inches tall, but the seat depth and width are above average, measuring 17.75 inches deep and 22 inches wide. That’s plenty of room to relax.

The generous armrests are spread wide, taking the chair’s full width to 31.25 inches and adding two prime spots to rest a drink, snack, or cell phone. Standing at 38.5 inches tall and boasting a 33.75-inch profile, this Adirondack is not too big and not too small—it’s just right.

The South Beach Adirondack is available in all of our lumber hues and finishes, adding to the seat’s versatility. Tangerine is a fun, fresh shade that warms up any space—a great complement to chill poolside settings, fireside scenes, and the homeowners’ front porch.

The Makeover Location

Blake and Amanda have an open-style front porch with a cool color scheme. It starts with a poured concrete foundation with three thick columns jutting to the grey-shingled roof. The pillars all feature the same grey stonework shown on their home’s exterior, with blue-grey siding and white trim above it.

The Color Experiment

While Blake and Amanda chose Tangerine for their new chairs, we were curious about what other lumber colors would pair well with their home. We figured this was a great opportunity to show how a few of our vibrant colors (along with a neutral) could be styled with the colors and textures of the Craftsman-style home.

First Up: Lemon

We loved how the yellow played off the beachy blue siding. Adding warmer accents with throw pillows covered in all-weather performance fabric and flirty coral accessories pulled the look together.

Next, We Gave Lime a Go

We liked the idea of pairing the lively green lumber with the home’s cool greys and blues. Warming the look were rich, dark wood planters and metallic accessories. Navy Linen pillows added to the more modern color scheme and helped balance the dark wood against the mid-grey tones of the stone.

Then, We Tried Teak

As a neutral option, we chose Teak, which automatically added warmth to the porch. We played up this traditional look with mustard-yellow accessories and Navy Linen throw pillows (this dark blue hue goes with almost everything). As a final touch, we added a light purple planter with yellow flowers, which gave the space a romantic feel.

The Final Look: Tangerine

This is the style that stayed at Blake and Amanda’s home. Inspired by a teal planter that was already in place (with the fern on the left), we combined the blue-green shade with cranberry-colored mums and contrasting pillows in our Glacier Spa fabric.

The couple loves their cozy porch space and still receives compliments from neighbors driving by. And since the chairs are hard to miss, it’s easy to direct visitors here. “Just look for the bright orange Adirondacks,” Blake always tells them.

  1. Which chairs and table would look well on a dark gray saltbox house, almost charcoal, for the front porch…..love the tangerine but, am planning to have front door painted cherry red, so tangerine will not work..
What do you think? Maybe I should paint the front door tangerine!

    1. Hi Diane! You could pull the red color onto your porch, playing up your red door, and go with our Sunset Red. That would be bold and fun. Or, our White lumber would really pop against the charcoal. Another direction you could go would be a front door in a color similar to our Aruba lumber (could be lighter, brighter, whatever you prefer). An Aruba-like door would look amazing with our Lime lumber and we just love Lime with dark gray.

Just some thoughts! If you’re willing to share the final product, send us pictures at social@polywoodinc.com. Good luck!

  2. I have a small cottage which is painted a sand color with mushroom trimming. The doors are painted a bright cherry red. I am looking for Adirondack chairs for my back deck. What color would you suggest? Would the aruba color work for a pop of color since it is opposite red on the color wheel?

    1. Hi Jeannine, yes the Aruba would be a lovely pop of color and definitely compliment your cherry red doors!

  3. I love what you are doing.
My near 80 year old husband has built a qazebo on the corner of our upstairs. It is very well made. I insisted we have bamboo composite for long lasting limited upkeep. He has now started on the railing. We are not of any great wealth and can’t afford the metals, glass etc, so he is making the posts and supports posts of yellowwood . My question, is there a spray on substance available these days so we could preserve it by coating it?
Your answers will be most appreciated. Thank you and your company for this great advancement.

    1. Hi Linda,

Thanks for checking out our posts! Since we don’t work with natural wood for our furniture we don’t have any tips in regards to preserving it. There are definitely thicker stains out there designed for coating decks — check out your local home improvement store and see if they can give you any more information. Best of luck!

  4. My wife and I are building a new home with front porches, rear covered porches and areas around our pool and Koi Fish Ponds and waterfalls. We want no maintenance outdoor furniture and heavy enough so wind does not affect them. We have done a little research so far and found Polywood and Seaside Collection and are trying to figure out the differences. There does not seem to be any information with direct comparison on quality/materials/ comfort and price. Would like your input. Dan

    1. Hi Dan,
      Thanks for considering POLYWOOD!
POLYWOOD is made from HDPE — short for “high-density polyethylene”. HDPE by nature, is an extremely durable plastic that is weather resistant and easy to clean. Our items are low maintenance, but not “no maintenance”. The furniture will still need to be cleaned from time to time, especially in a salt air environment. Many of our items are heavy enough to stay put in strong winds (our Adirondack chairs tend to be in the 35 to 45 lb range for example).
