Setting & Achieving Goals

When I began working at Poly-Wood 10 months ago, I was introduced to something that I believe is a great representation of our culture and the individuals we have working here.

At Poly-Wood we’re always striving to improve. One of the ways we’re accomplishing this is by incorporating an efficiency goal in our production facilities. Meeting and exceeding our efficiency goal allows us to better serve our customers, reduce waste, and accurately price our products.

I keep a list of my own personal goals on my phone and delete them as they’re accomplished.

When our production teams achieve their weekly goal Poly-Wood hosts a Friday luncheon. It’s a way of motivating and showing our appreciation for hard work and dedication.

This past week I spent some time visiting with a few of our team members to hear their thoughts…

Does having an efficiency goal achievement luncheon motivate you to be more efficient?

I think so, other than a pat on the back and a good pay check. It’s a good incentive to get good takt times.

(FYI – “Takt time” for those who don’t know, is the average time between the start of production of one unit and the start of production of the next unit)

As an Area Leader, how do you help your team with this goal?

Supporting them, training them properly, and being available when they have mistakes or questions. Just leading from the front.

Definitely drives the desire to put forth an effort to achieve that goal. Everybody likes free food.

Yes, hitting these goals has allowed me to be able to do more things with my family. My productivity has helped me financially and I am very happy where I’m at. The drive to achieve goals has allowed me to have different positions here. I started out as a grinder, moved to a CNC operator, and now I am a robotic welding operator. I want to be productive.

Yes, I like the variety…I’m pushing for a breakfast.

Goals ultimately give you motivation, allow you to focus, & help you grow.

Right now, our office employees are working on their own “Personal Development Plans”. We’re challenged with setting professional and personal goals for ourselves (short term, mid-term and long term). Over the course of the year we’ll be meeting with our supervisors to see the progress we’ve made. It will be great to see what we’ve accomplished at the end of 2016!
