I love to read. In almost all situations I would rather be on my couch, snuggled up to my crazy pooch and my fiancé, reading.
I love everything about books; they take you wherever you want to go.
Books are pretty much the closest thing to magic us Muggles have, so I take what I can get. (If you haven’t read Harry Potter, a muggle is a person who possesses no magical skills or abilities.)
I’m typically really into sci-fi / dystopian series, but I’m also a sucker for a good love story or an intriguing biography. When I pick a book I am almost always looking for a series because I am a firm believer that one book is just not enough to tell a story–I want multiple books.
So when I came across The Giver, I was hooked because there were 4 books (woot). Now, I know most of you probably read The Giver in high school. But, I’m telling you to try it again when you aren’t being forced to read it for a grade; it’s a much different experience.
Louis Lowry paints an amazing picture of a world that is much different than ours; a world created to protect the people who live within it. In an effort to maintain order, structure, and sameness for all, this world has no color, memory, emotion or climate.
In the “Ceremony of Twelve”, a ceremony where the children who turn 12 receive their job assignment for the rest of their lives, we meet Jonas who has just been carefully chosen to become the next, “Receiver”. The book follows Jonas through his awesome and trying journey in receiving all the memories of the past.
Well, since I’ve shared with you what I’m reading I thought it would only be fair to find out what other Poly-Wood bookworms have their noses in…
Jenny Neer says she likes to listen to books on tape during her commute to work (which can be 45 min-1 hr, so lots of listening time!). She’s currently enjoying The Name of the Wind, which is a part of the King Killer Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. She said “at the moment this book almost has a Harry Potter feel because the main character is at a magic school.”
Steffanie Stookey told me that she’s currently reading LEAD…for God’s Sake! by Todd G. Gongwer. According to Steffanie, “it’s really teaching me about the leader I want to be and the kind of person I want to lead me.”
Like me, Steffanie is an avid reader and said she loves anything by Nicholas Sparks or Janet Evanovich. She’s also a huge fan of the Divergent series, The Scorch Trials and most of all Harry Potter!
Dannielle Goodrich’s next “must-read” is Mindy Kaling’s Why Not Me. But right now her reading time mostly consists of reading to her little boy. One of her favorites is Mr. Tiger Goes Wild–a book that has “amazing illustrations and a cute story about being who you are, even if it’s not the same as everyone else.”
The Going to Bed Book and The Day the Crayons Quit are two other personal favorites in the Goodrich family.
That’s what we have our noses in at the moment, any must-reads for you this fall?
